The UEFA Europa League, previously known as the UEFA Cup and abbreviated as UEL or UEFA EL, is an annual football club competition organized by UEFA since 1971 for eligible European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.
The competition format has undergone several changes over the years, but it currently consists of a group stage followed by a knockout phase. The group stage is played between 32 teams, which are divided into eight groups of four teams each. The teams play each other home and away, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout phase.
The knockout phase consists of two-legged ties, with the away goals rule applied in the event of a draw. The final is played at a neutral venue, and the winner qualifies for the UEFA Super Cup and the following season's UEFA Champions League.
